A população de Mocoa, na Colômbia, foi atingida pela pior tragédia, que já aconteceu em seus 454 anos de história. Mocoa é a capital de Putumayo, uma região que se encontra a sudeste da Colômbia, na América do Sul.
Durante o mês de março choveu muito e, especialmente, na noite de sexta feira, 31 de março de 2017. Às duas horas da manhã de sábado, 1 de abril, os habitantes de Mocoa foram atingidos pela pior tragédia que já lhes aconteceu nos 454 anos de sua história. Os três rios principais, que atravessam a cidade, arrastaram milhares de toneladas de lama em dezessete bairros, e o de São Miguel ficou completamente submerso pela lama, juntamente com seus habitantes. São 254 mortos e mais de 200 feridos no último número oficial das vítimas.
A partir do momento em que aconteceu a tragédia, tanto os militares, como a polícia do lugar, começaram a prestar ajuda, para retirar da lama centenas de pessoas ainda vivas.
«A avalanche arrastou tudo, edifícios, carros, pontes. Estamos realmente isolados», afirma Sorel Aroca, primeira autoridade da região. A governadora disse que na cidade falta o gás, não há mais água, não há energia e, para colocar tudo no lugar serão necessários vários dias. Além disso, algumas estradas de entrada e saída da cidade estão bloqueadas pela grande quantidade de terra, de lama, de árvores e carros destruídos pela água dos rios.
O Presidente, Juan Manuel Santos, foi ao local da tragédia e declarou estado de calamidade em toda a região. O Estado logo levou às famílias atingidas os bens de primeira necessidade: comida, água, roupas, mais de três mil cobertores e colchões. O Presidente Santos ordenou um subsídio de duzentos e cinquenta mil pesos, a serem entregues no primeiro trimestre às família afetadas.
Na Colômbia, as fma estão presentes no sul do país, perto da região de Putumayo. Elas não foram atingidas por esta tragédia, mas se interessaram logo pelo fato e sensibilizaram as comunidades educativas para responderem com generosidade às necessidades da população vizinha.
