La popolazione di Mocoa in Colombia è stata colpita dalla peggiore tragedia mai capitata nei 454 anni della sua storia. Mocoa è la città capitale del Putumayo, una regione che si trova al Sud Ovest della Colombia in Sud America.

Durante il mese di marzo è piovuto abbondantemente e in modo particolare nella notte di venerdì 31 marzo 2017. Alle due del mattino di sabato 1 aprile, gli abitanti di Mocoa sono colpiti dalla peggiore tragedia mai capitata nei 454 anni della sua storia. I tre fiumi principali che l'attraversano, hanno trascinato migliaia di tonnellate di fango in diciassette quartieri, e quello di San Miguel completamente sommerso dal fango insieme a tutti i suoi abitanti. Ci sono 254 morti e più di 200 feriti nell'ultimo bilancio ufficiale delle vittime.

Dal momento in cui è capitata la tragedia, sia i militari, che la polizia del posto, hanno incominciato a prestare aiuto, per togliere dal fango centinaia di persone ancora in vita.

«La valanga ha portato via tutto, edifici, macchine, ponti. Siamo proprio isolati», afferma Sorel Aroca, prima autorità della regione. La governatrice ha detto che nella città mancano il gas, non c'è più acqua, non c'è corrente, e per mettere tutto a posto saranno necessari parecchi giorni. Inoltre, alcune strade d'ingresso e uscita sono bloccate a causa della grande quantità di terra, di fango, di alberi e macchine distrutte dall'acqua dei fiumi.

Il Presidente, Juan Manuel Santos, si è recato al luogo della tragedia e ha dichiarato lo stato di calamità in tutta la regione. Lo Stato ha subito portato alle famiglie colpite i beni di prima necessità: cibo, acqua, vestiario, più di tremila coperte e materassi. Il Presidente Santos ha disposto un sussidio di duecentocinquanta mila pesos, da consegnare nei primi tre mesi alle famiglie colpite.

In Colombia le fma sono presenti nel Sud del Paese vicino alla regione di Putumayo. Non sono state colpite da questa tragedia, ma si sono subito interessate e hanno sensibilizzato le comunità educanti per rispondere con generosità ai bisogni della popolazione vicina.
