Alessandra Smerilli State Councilor at the Vatican
Rome (Italy). On 17 April 2019, the appointment as State Councilor of Vatican City of Prof. Alessandra Smerilli, Daughter of Mary Help of Christians and Full Professor of Political Economy at the "Auxilium" Faculty of Rome was made public. Her mandate, which is carried out collegially together with other councilors gathered in the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State, is for a five year term.
Sister Alessandra who, in addition to teaching in the «Auxilium» Faculty, has teaching positions in other university institutions, is a member of the Scientific and Organizational Committee of the Social Weeks of Catholics promoted by the Italian Episcopal Conference, and is among the experts of the National Council of the Third sector, a body set up at the Ministry of Labor and of Social Policies.
The State Councilor provides assistance in the elaboration of the Vatican Laws and in other matters of particular importance. The Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State, composed of a General Councilor and five State Councilors, is the body that exercises legislative power in the Vatican City State. It is the dicastery that holds the de facto administration of the Vatican City State, overseeing most public functions and representing the Pope in the State.
