The work of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians of the Pre-Province Mary Help of Christians Ethiopia South Sudan (AES) at Khartoum in Sudan are involved in Salesian educational work, doing something to change the life of thousands of children and remove them from misery that becomes inhuman.

Sr. Teresa Roszkowska of Mary Help of Christians Community tells of the life of thousands of persons in Sudan.
“There are 400 children studying in our school in Khartoum: 120 in the primary school and 280 in the higher grades. 80% of these children are victims of the war in South Sudan. Many have been deeply wounded, frightened, sick, and above all, very hungry. We help them as much as we can.”

The FMA work in Sudan is a witness of the educational mission among the poorest. It is a great service that functions thanks to benefactors from the whole world. “Every child has a uniform and a hot meal every day. The sick children are brought to the doctor. Visits are made to the families living in very difficult conditions, especially the young mothers. Near the FMA community live very poor families that we accompany every day and a collaborator of our community brings them food.”

Before beginning lessons, there are of 15 minutes of rhythm exercise to music. The exercises help to relax and calm them. We are dealing with a slow process of re-integration for the wounded hearts of the children. From Friday to Sunday, over 300 children come to the oratory where they can play, watch a film, enjoy themselves. Some take a bath and others wash their clothes because there is no water where they live. At the end, we pray and we give them what Divine Providence has sent us: cookies, candies, and soap.

Sr. Teresa writes: “Seeing so much poverty and suffering, our eyes fill with tears and our heart with sadness”.
