In South India, Chennai the capital of Tamil Nadu was affected by catastrophic flooding as the result of the heaviest rain fall.
There are 7 FMA communities out of which three communities - Provincial House, Kodambakkam, Mannivakkam, Vyasarpadi campus were filled with rain water. Water entered all the rooms - Chapel, Refectory, Office rooms, Parlour, etc. of the ground floor.
The schools are flooded, many houses are submerged in water, thousands are homeless, Schools were closed. No electricity, telephone, mobile and internet services for many days. Even train and flight services were cancelled.
The suffering people are very many. It is heart rending to see the people suffering due to the loss of people, house and belongings. So through Auxilium flood relief services we reach out to help the needy by distributing food packets, clothes, candles, milk packets, eatables, bed sheets, medicines directly to the affected people irrespective of caste, language and religion. We motivate and mobilize the parents, teachers and youth of our Institutions to reach out to these affected people. This relief service is still on the swing in collaboration with the Educating Community members, volunteers, past pupils, Salesian co-operators and VIDES.
Children and women residing in and around Marialaya - North Chennai have undergone untold suffering and immense miseries because of recent flood. Their belongings along with certificates and important documents are washed away. Houses collapsed and people are homeless. Marialaya Chennai as a relief measures distributed food kit consisting of bread packets, water, juice bottle, biscuits and chocolates along with towel and blanket to meet the urgent situation and the relief measures will be continued till Jan 2016. Almost 1225 victims are benefitting daily by Marialaya's relief measures.
15 VIDES members distributed food packets and water bottles, Bed Sheets, Mat, mosquito coils, candles, match boxes, bread, biscuit packets, Milk Powder and diapers for children and people for a week in 8 villages and for the affected people who are accommodated in Government College, Tiruvottiyur.
The Emergent need of the flood victim is reached out at present by the Province. The rehabilitation work will follow later. The flood victims will be reached out through medical camps, Educational help for students who study in our schools, renovation and construction of the houses through generous helpers.
