P. Mathew Vattamattam CMF, Elected Superior General
The General Chapter of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Claretians), taking place in Rome, elected the 13th Superior General of the Congregation: Fr. Mathew Vattamattam, originally from Kalathoor, in the Indian State Kerala.
Mother and the Council Sisters of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) share the joy of this election. At General Chapter XXIII, there the Spanish Claretian, Fr. José Cristo Rey García Paredes accompanied the General Council on the journey of preparation for the Chapter event. He was a wise and illumined guide in key moments of the preparatory journey.
Election Day began with the Eucharistic celebration. During the Mass, the light of the Holy Spirit was invoked to direct this discernment, so important for the life of the Institute. Fr. Matthew said, "We are missionaries", and he accepted this great responsibility.
Fr. Mathew Vattamattam CMF was born on May 30, 1959 in Kalathoor, Kerala, India of St. Mary's Parish, Kalathoor. He completed his basic studies at St. Mary School, Kalathoor, and his higher studies at St. John School in Kanjirathanam.
He entered the Congregation in Claret Bhavan of Kuravilangad on July 3, 1974. He made his first profession on May 31, 1978 and his perpetual vows on May 31, 1984. He was ordained a priest on May 10, 1986.
From 1986 to 1987, he worked as Assistant to the Vocation Animator and Assistant to the Formator of the aspirants at Claret Bhavan Kuravilangad. From 1987 to 1988, he was nominated as Vocation Animator and Assistant to the Formator in the Minor Seminary of Belgaum. From 1988 to 1989, he was assigned as Assistant in St. Mary Parish of Champakulam, Kerala. From 1989 to 1994, he studied in Rome, obtaining a Degree in Systematic Theology and in Psychology at the Gregorian University.
In 1994-96, he was nominated Director of Claret Nivas, the Retreat House in Bangalore and Assistant to the Novice Master. From 1996 to 2003, he served as Novice Master of the Bangalore Province.
At the XXIII General Chapter in Rome in 2003, he was elected as General Consulter and Prefect of Formation and re-elected in 2009 at the XXIV General Chapter.
