Still Young at Eighty
On September 24, Sr. Madeleine Normoyle, FMA, who is a member of the Finglas Community , Dublin , Ireland , celebrated her 80 th birthday. This event was celebrated by the local parish and school (not run by the FMA) where, among other things, Madeleine gives her service, on a voluntary basis, as a Eucharistic Minister to the sick and housebound and helps children with literacy difficulties. The recent Parish Quarterly Newsletter was almost totally dedicated to her and the following article, written by the lay head teacher of the school, was among the contributions and shows how a true Salesian educator never really 'retires' :
«My first introduction to Sr. Madeleine (affectionately known as Sr. Mad!), came through the Home School Liaison Teacher, Celine Clonan, many years ago. Sr. Madeleine was a retired primary school teacher and was eager to help out in the school. She offered to help the children with their reading.
No sooner had I agreed when Sr. Mad moved into room 6 with me armed with sweets, miraculous medals, holy pictures and rosary beads. Within 10 minutes of meeting Sr. Mad the children were hooked! So were the teachers. We got sweets too!
The children loved all the treats but most importantly they loved her kindness and words of praise and encouragement.
Sr. Madeleine is woven into the fabric of St. Finian's N.S. She may be 80 but she has the mind and heart of an 18 year old. She is a treasured part of our school community and continues to inspire us all with her strength, patience, courage, humanity, kindness and wonderful sense of humour».
